1963 Dodge Polara Convertible

A very rare early B body MoPar refinished in the original Polar White with Medium Turquoise interior, NO RUST, original body panels, original factory finish inside the trunk, also still retains all the unique inside the trunk the factory installed on the B body Convertibles, all the original tinted glass is still in excellent condition, including the dates windshield, all have the “forward look”, logo Chrysler Corp still used until late in ‘63. All these details offer a look into a car’s history, and how well it was loved, cared for, and maintained, and it’s becoming very difficult find such a car!
The Polara is powered by a healthy Chrysler 400 Big Block, with 440 Six Pack heads, a Push Button, Torque Flight, and Chrysler 8 3/4 Differential geared for long hauls and interstate speeds, with a 2:91 ratio. The car was purchased new at Dana Bros Chrysler/Dodge in Tempe, Arizona, and stayed in Arizona and California until early 2000’s when a retired Boeing Engineer, (a long time MoPar enthusiast), brought the car back to Tennessee. I found this great MoPar about four years ago and it followed me to my home in Georgia. We’ve driven the Dodge everywhere, and frequently, including a 1,100 mile trip to Amarillo, Texas with absolutely no issues!
Mr. Opatik told me he sent the 400 engine block and Six Pack heads out to be checked, tested, and partially assembled at Douglas Porting Service, who has specialized in MoPars for 25 plus years. The heads have had extensive polishing, porting and a five angle valve job performed, and hardened seats before assembly. A Comp Cam similar the MoPar Purple Cam was used, while pistons, and other parts to rebuild were ordered from Mancini’s Racing and 440 Source. The engine is good for 330 HP and was purposely built for pump gas, sitting in traffic w/o any overheating, or 80 on an Interstate.
The car is equipped with an updated Torque Flight Trans, also completely rebuilt by Serious Driveline Services, and they also rebuilt the funky Push Button mechanism, replaced all the cables with made new made USA cables, so there would be no issues, and it works perfectly!
A new aluminum driveshaft was made in house by the drive shaft professionals at Chattanooga Driveline in Tenn, they also supplied the all the new inner parts for the
Chrysler 8 3/4 differential.
The original brake system was removed and replaced with the seldom seen 1968 Road Runner Heavy Duty Brake system….an option offered in 1968, and the brakes work surprisingly well, and actually just as good as an aftermarket disc kit I installed on another car a few years ago.
The Dodge also has factory power steering, and was updated using a close ratio steering gear from a mid 70’s Dodge police car. Just one of several direct bolt on upgrades MoPars can benefit from.
Probably the coolest (no pun intended), thing about the Polara is that the car came equipped with factory Air Conditioning, but thankfully, Mr. Opatik removed all the old inferior and heavy parts and pieces, and chose and installed a Vintage Air climate control unit that’s mounted, along with the controls, under the dash, and out of site! He retained those big chrome, beautifully designed, factory AC / Defrost, Air outlets, (air deflectors, air registers), to allow ice cold Air or warn heat to blow thru in style, it all performs nicely.
Other careful modifications which look factory by design…..
Carefully crafted and installed frame connectors….
The rear leaf springs were relocated 1.5” in order to use a nicely proportioned wheels and the widest on the rear without unnecessary modifications.
A question frequently asked is how the stance was achieved? First of all, there’s not many vendors who make parts to easily lower MoPars. To accomplish such a great stance (while staying away from cheap parts), various torsion springs with different spring ratings were swapped out eleven times….and finally a torsion spring used on some of the early Max Wedge cars was the winning combination for looks & drivability and the car looks great, and drives beautifully!
I have a Georgia title in my name, also current Georgia registration, insured, all in my name and current!
Another question is usually, Why are you selling? It’s simple….I want something else, like most gear heads.
Thank you.
I encourage anyone interested please give a call if you have any questions, concerns, or to request additional photographs etc, video.
