1963 Volkswagen Van

This 1963 Volkswagen Type 2 panel van was reportedly owned by a supper club in South Dakota before being purchased by in 2012 and has been used to promote restaurants in southeastern Michigan since. The weathered green paint is the authentic patina that everyone tries to duplicate!  The interior has a reupholstered gray vinyl seat, with the rest of the interior being original.

The original VDO speedometer shows 53k miles, though the mileage is unknown to be actual. The 1500 engine is in good shape, along with the original transaxle.  The battery and starter were replaced last fall, and the van retains its 6v electrical system.  All of the doors open and latch nicely, along with the front sliding windows.  The engine compartment cover is missing the latch, but those are readily available in both original and aftermarket.

The M-plate reveals the following information:

  • 09 08 2 – Planned production date of August 9, 1962
  • 360 – North American export
  • 195 – Adjustable bench seat/backrest
  • UD – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania destination
  • 211 – Panel van, right-side cargo doors, left-hand drive
  • GREEN – Turquoise paint (L380)
  • 979219 – Serial number

As seen in the photos, the van has some surface rust on the outside, as well as on the floors, with some slight rust in the rear body corners and bottoms of the doors.  The drip rails are solid.  This is a great candidate for your business, as it attracts a ton of attention and comments, or put it back on the road! Located near Auburn Hills, MI (about 45 miles north of Detroit).
