1965 Chevrolet C-10

This ’65 began as a dream truck from west Texas with a clean title. It was in particularly good condition for sitting in the desert. It was found on eBay and was transported to us in Minnesota to undergo its transformation. This truck was chosen because my dad, Greg, had the vision to put a long box truck on bags and join the pop-up truckin’ community back in 2010 when he purchased it.  Greg’s motorhead passion continued as he poured his heart and soul into this build. He was an up-and-coming builder in the hot rod industry before Leukemia took his life in late 2013. Previously Greg had built an award-winning ’67 Buick Skylark “Lowlark” raising eyebrows around the upper midwest and beyond for his talented creations with co-artists like Roger Burman from Lakeside Rod and Rides out of Fort Dodge Iowa. Greg’s builds gained him a coveted seat as a Goodguy’s Rod and Custom judge in July 2013. This build was for him to really take chances, push the envelope, and dive into devilish creativity.

This truck sits firmly on the original frame. The frame was chopped and equipped with a Porterbuilt dropmember kit in both the front and rear. The sides were boxed and dimple dyed for a “trick” look that was sported inside, outside, and under the truck. The frame and all components of this build were blasted and powder coated by Greg’s shop Extreme Powder Coating of Blooming Prairie, MN. See the Facebook page for many pictures of the build in progress. Two compressors and AccuAir system lower and raise the truck. The display for bag air levels are tucked in a dash console. Top-of-the-line suspension, original spindles, Wilwood brakes and Delmo centerline smoothies with dog dishes (20″s & 22″s) on Falken rubber keep this machine rolling.

The one-of-a-kind patina finish on the truck has not been altered. The front fenders needed minimal alterations. The original trim was brush-finished. The stripping and lettering were done by Lenny Schwartz of Krazy Kolors at World of Wheels. The hood has been louvered (Dan Pate) as well as a tailgate panel to match the front end. The cab was separated and sandblasted. The firewall and lower interior were powder coat primed and black. The upper interior is coated in white. The roof and exterior top of the cab were blasted and finished in a white powder coat with a faux powder-coated patina finish. A real work of creativity and art making this a unique feature of the build.

In the bed of the truck, we have a custom bed frame and bead-rolled aluminum panels as well as widened wheel tubs. A nice view of the stock GM rear end housing with 4:10 gears can be viewed through the truck bed. Custom pinstriping by Jeremy Pedersen of Relic Kustoms is on display.  We also have access doors to the kill switch, compressors, and batteries in the bed. The bed also features a transport rack and gas fill door, and vintage 7 up cooler slot.

Under the hood, Greg spent some time figuring out what was going to work best. He chose a 383 Blue Print Stroker, with a Centerforce flywheel. Aluminum heads and Trick flow intake are on the motor. A MSD fuel injection system was installed with an Atomic EFI display inside the cab. The odometer reads 7,000 miles put on by Gregs family over the last decade. Following the motor we have a 6-speed corvette transmission powdered by a Ram performance clutch.

Inside the truck, Greg got even more creative. Everything original was out, and everything Impala went in. The Impala dash sets the stage for Classic Instrument gauges and Vintage Air. A custom powder coat job looks outstanding on the dash in contrast to machine turned aluminum panels. More dimple dye features are found in the interior making the whole build seamlessly cohesive throughout. The “metal flake” black carpeting is the perfect addition with removable mats. The Impala bucket seats offer a cool laid back comfortable ride with lap belts. The hand created center council houses the electric exhaust cut out switch, GPS navigation system and radio.

Greg almost made it to the end of his build before he passed away. Extreme Powder Coating and Greg’s family finished it and traveled to many shows to tell his story and show case his build. It was featured in Street Trucks magazine and Guage magazine.
